In the synagogue on the Sabbath there were people who had gathered to hear the word. Luke recorded that among them there was one woman, “There was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up” (Luke 13:11). Because of a body that had stiffened over many long years, that woman could not straighten her body and stand by herself. Luke does not record that the woman first approached Jesus and asked for help. Jesus saw her, called her, and said that she was loosed from her infirmity. The scene of salvation did not begin from the effort of the suffering person but from the compassion and authority of the Lord, who recognized her.
